Jack's Story: The life and death of Jack Fleming by Ken Fleming | PB

This book is about a very brave young man, his family, his diagnosis, struggle and death. It is a love story and a tragedy and tells about an ordinary family who waged an extraordinary battle against a disease that takes no prisoners and has no cure.

I was with him when he took his first breath and I was with him when he took his last. One was a moment of exquisite pleasure and the other was a moment of unimaginable pain.

He was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer on a cold, wet and wintry 8 July 2016. He was nineteen. He died at 1.45pm on 15 April 2018. I promised him I would save his life and write a book and the book is the only promise that survived.

My wife, Dianne, and I didn’t know about brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme and dealing with the loss of a child. We are smarter now but none the wiser. The book is my way of venting, remembering, reminiscing and maybe, just maybe, I can help save a life and the universe will be in harmony again.
—Ken Fleming, Jack’s father

Jack’s Story will raise awareness of the devastation this disease has on the family of victims and an understanding of what young patients confront when told their life is over before it really begins. Jack’s legacy will be to help people understand that horror, raise awareness of the very limited options patients have when given a death sentence and raise funds for the treatment and (hopefully) prevention of this nefarious disease so young lives are not stolen.

Jack’s life was happy and fulfilled before that fateful day in 2016 when he was told he had 12 months to live. A website <jacksstory.com.au> has been created to celebrate his life, to raise awareness of glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer and highlight the need to search and discover a cure.
